Grief Recovery

While grief is a normal emotion associated with the inevitable losses in our lives, intractable, unchanging and long lasting grief that interferes with day to day well-being and your relationships with family, friends and co-workers is not normal. Even after being a veterinarian for many years I found myself in this place as I continued to struggle with the death of one of my pets over 20 years after she passed away. In my journey for resolution I learned about the Grief Recovery Method for Pet Loss and eventually became a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist myself credentialed through the Grief Recovery Institute. In my pet hospice practice I encounter pet owners that experience all types and levels of grief on the death or impending death of their animal companions. Even those who are inconsolable initially are absolutely normal. Sadly, many individuals also find that family and friends don’t understand their level of their grief. This is also, unfortunately normal.

If you’ve found you are still dealing with issues of grief after your pet has passed away, cannot let go of feelings of loss, separation, sadness or guilt please know that you are still very normal. Without comparing our relationships with our pets to those with people, we know that, because of the unique emotional relationships we have with our pets, their deaths produce a level of pain that is difficult to describe. If you relate to any or all of these sentences, then please considering enrolling in one of the 3 or 6 weeks sessions I teach throughout the Atlanta area.

As a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist I believe the Grief Recovery Method for Pet Loss can help get you back on the path to moving past your grief and getting back to emotional wholeness. I will be with you on this journey to help your heart deal with the absence of your cherished companion.

Many of the questions I receive about grief and the emotional side of pet loss are addressed in my blog. Please feel to review the information there and if you have any questions send me an email at drgreg@atlantapethospice.com
